Background Information

In 2008, the first National Goat S&T Program was implemented to improve productivity and meet the local
demands for goat. The program developed products and processes such as feeds for growing and lactating goats, AI system, farm recording system, and a herbal dewormer. These are major accomplishments of the program and are a big help to the industry, still much R&D have to be done to make these milestones functional and help attain an increase in inventory and production (National S&T on Slaughter Goat, 2013).

In the Industry Strategic Plan (ISP) of PA 2020, it was estimated that to make a dent in productivity, the doe has to have an increase in conception rate from 75 to 90% and a decrease in kidding interval from 270 to 240 days. For the kids, on the other hand, there has to be a decrease in preweaning mortality from 25 to 10% and an increase in slaughter weight from 15 to 30 kilos.

Consultations were made with some key players of the industry in 2012. The following focused package of R&D solutions were agreed to be implemented to catalyse the attainment of these ISP targets. In essence, these are the major components of the National S&T Program on Slaughter Goat being implemented for four years (2013-2016) in Regions 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, and 12, to wit:

Institutionalization of the farm recording system;
Wider promotion of alternative management interventions;
